AWARD WINNING ATHLONE TOWN CENTRE RECEIVES "OSCAR" FOR URBAN DESIGN
The Irish Planning Institute has awarded Athlone Town Centre "The Urban Design Award" at a ceremony in Dublin today. The award is further recognition of the tremendous regeneration achievement that has resulted in the delivery of one of Europes finest town centres.

The centre has successfully integrated with the main town centre and has delivered a superb mixed use scheme encompassing retail/restaurants/hotel/residential and 1200 underground car parking and offices.
The centre ,already a huge "hit" with shoppers - (over 100000 shoppers visit the centre every week ) has become a central point for people to meet,eat,relax and enjoy the new urban space that has been created by Murray Olaoire architects.
One of the overiding achievements has been to deliver "large box" retail formats within a restricted site area whilst at the same time creating open airy mall spaces- "the reaction from shoppers has been very positive" according to Gerry Mulcahy commercial director of Athlone Town Centre.
"The fantastic mix of high street European, International and National retailers,combined with leading edge store fit outs has created an environment unsurpassed in an Irish context"
A huge endorsement of the centre has been the delivery of Zara, H&M, Promod, Tommy Hilfiger and M&S among 80 other retail names.
Mr mulcahy added that the centre is "fast becoming a model for international urban designers, architects and town planners to examine- already a large no. have visited the scheme to view the layout, finishes and integration with Athlones existing townscape" |
